Challenger AccidentShortly after lift-off on January 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger suffered a tragic accident. A leak in a joint of one of the shuttle's Solid Rocket Boosters (SRB) caused the bracket holding the SRB to fail. The SRB pivoted into the main fuel tank, crushing it. This caused an explosion. As the shuttle came apart, aerodynamic forces tore apart the orbiter. All seven members of the crew died.
