Brief:
This is a clone of the Missile Works Atmospheric Sounding Projectile, it has a
38mm outer tube. I got all the parts as a custom kit from LOC, but they say
they may make a real kit out of it soon! It is about a 1/4 scale (.252) version
of the rocket used to probe mushroom clouds, and the sky during a solar eclipse
in the IGY.
Construction:
It has one very small (4 inch) payload section, a very long motor tube, and
really big slots. The slots go almost the entire length of the fin! Way too
long in my opinion .... but hey, it worked! I also got a very nice red
parachute from LOC.
No instructions, but it was a custom kit, so I shouldn't have expected any. Very straight forward. Alignment was an issue, the slots were not dead-on; but good enough for a stable flight. The real kit will probably have more precise slots. Once assembled, it is very sturdy. It makes an excellent addition to my rocket fleet; my new second-favorite (First is a tie between my Mach Buster 1 and my first mid power IQSY Thomahawk).
Finishing:
No big issues with finishing. I used the Bikini-Atoll paint scheme, and it
looks really good!

Flight:
This model was terrific! I flew it with an EconoJet G35-7W, and it was the
perfect match. The orange-white paint scheme, of the operational sounding
rockets, was very visible; even from 1,500 feet. SpaceCAD says it flew to
2,750', and it looked like it too. That thing can really move! When it
descended to 1,500', you could see the orange fins spinning in the breeze,
making a very easy to track bird. The only problem was that at about 50', the
nose disconnected from the payload bay; nearly hitting my best friend on the
head (We were both chasing after the rocket). No damage done, however. I had a
Nomex®
shield, which I thought was small, but turned out to be fine. This eliminated
the need for wadding. I also had a Slimline motor retainer on it, so the motor
stayed put.
Recovery:
The shock cord was attached with the standard loop technique used in all LOC
kits. Recovery was picture perfect - a little bit of black on the parachute,
but no biggie.

Summary:
This is a great rocket. fairly easy to paint, only one difficult spot on the
nose cone; otherwise it is easy as pie. Simple construction, simple every
thing. preps in under 5 minutes. I like it!
