Eldred Pickett's Descon-14 Entry
Ok, this was only the second design I've ever come up with. I wanted to do something I had an idea for, just to see if I could do it. The 'fins' are simply two 5-inch circles of balsa, glued at the end of the body tube. Think of the body as the meat in a sandwich. Hopefully, the pictures make it clear.
I wasn't sure if that would be stable, so I added 3 triangular fins to the tube near the nose cone. I finally cobbled together a launch rig that could shoot a clustered bird. It launched with 2 B6-4 engines. The rocket corkscrewed a bit during flight, but didn't go too far off. Parachute came out smoothly, and it recovered well. I tried to get a picture of takeoff, but since I didn't have the kids with me I had to launch and try to snap the picture at the same time. I got a *beautiful* picture of the smoke trail. Other pics show close-ups of design, and recovery.
