Gone in 60 cc
I was
looking over the descon entries and I saw a lot of different designs, and I was
wondering what I can make into a rocket... then I looked at some 60 cc syringe
that a professor gave me, and it's round, its hard, and I bet it will fly!
Here's what you need:
- 2 60cc syringe
- some BT-50
- a spent Estes D motor (or any other motor mount of your choice)
- a CD that no one (including yourself) wants.
- Masking tapes
- Kevlar®
- Streamers
- Take a 60 cc syringe and saw off either end, this will be your bottom
section.
- Take the other 60 cc syringe and saw off the plunger end, then measure
about .75 inch from the end where the needle goes, and cut that off. Save the
"nosecone"
- Glue a BT-50 with some tape wrapped around it into the "nosecone"
to make a shoulder. The BT-50 will have a very loose fit in the 60cc syringe so
you need to widen the tube with masking tape in order to glue it. I used epoxy
and it works fine.
- Use another BT-50 to join both syringes together.
- Glue a BT-50 the length of a D motor to the bottom of the syringe, this
will be your motor mount. Now you can decide whether or not to use 18mm mounts.
If you want to use 18mm mounts, either glue in a spent D motor, or glue in a
motor mount for 18mm motors, but before you do that, thread some Kevlar® through
the BT-50 and tie a knot at the bottom end. Then glue the motor mount in, the
Kevlar® will be your shock cord.
- Cut a CD into whatever shape you want (I just cut it into 4 pieces and glue
3 of the piece into the syringe with CA followed by epoxy fillets)
- Add streamer and the right amount of nose weight. You need quite a bit
because the syringe is a little heavy....
I need to add a flight report.... I flew my gone in 60cc Saturday on a A8-3,
and the rocket just sizzled on the pad.... apparently it was too heavy, then
the ejection charge popped and charred the inside of the rocket and broke a
fin... so it's retired...
