Scratch - Gariel Upscale

Brief:
Single stage, mid power rocket that uses two body tube diameters. Recovery via parachute

Construction:
Two body tubes (BT-60 and BT-55) 8 fins and 4 body strakes

All part numbers are from Semroc unless otherwise noted:

  • BNC-60AH nose cone
  • BT-60 main body tube
  • BT-55 lower body tube
  • RA-5560 centering ring (2)
  • JT-55C tube coupler
  • BT-50 engine tube
  • RA-5055 centering ring (2)
  • SE-10 screw eye
  • Kevlar shock cord
  • Apogee 13056 launch lug (2)

Finishing:
I papered the fins and used Rustoleum filler primer to take care of body spirals and strakes. The lower body tube connects to the upper tube via two centering rings and a tube coupler. This coupler was used to give more strength. Coat of Rust-O-Leum sandable primer, thorough sanding, re-coat of primer and then shot the first coat of light gray. Two more coats of gray. Photos I have seen of this rocket have no markings so I decided to paint the body light gray and the nose red.

Flight:
My first flight was D12-5. I would not recommend D12-3. You need the longer delay. It also performs well with D15-7 and E15-7.

Recovery:
I used 150lb. Kevlar tied to motor mount. I always use about three times the rocket's length and secure it to the motor mount. I also like to wrap some tape around the cord where it meets the end of the body tube to prevent zippering.

Summary:
PROs: unusual design, good flyer

Other:
CONs: lots of wood needed
